What is an Unplugged Wedding?
Imagine; you spend thousands of dollars on your wedding photographer, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the photos of your gorgeous, dreamy day.
When the photographer hands them over to you, you can’t help but feel a wave of disappointment when you see the crowd of smartphones, tablets, and even iPads held aloft during your ceremony. You and your spouse are just barely visible.
This is unfortunately a common occurrence, and many couples have regretted not deciding on an unplugged ceremony, which would allow their photographer to fully utilise their professional experience.
HOW TO PLAN AN UNPLUGGED WEDDING
One
Decide early on in the wedding planning - talk to your fiancé, plan the details, and then send them out to guests when you send them their invitations. If you’re creating a wedding website to continuously keep your guests up to date, make sure to include news of your unplugged wedding and what that means so everyone is on the same page.
Two
Offer an alternative - We know that your wedding is going to be gorgeous, and we also know that when people see how gorgeous of a set up it is, they’re going to want to take that “Insta-worthy” photo. Offer them an alternative that keeps them off their devices but still having fun, like disposable cameras or Polaroid cameras. These cameras are a fun way to get the perspective of your guests throughout the night, in a more casual, unfiltered manner than your professional photos, and it’ll keep their trigger finger snapping away happily. But remember, if you’re using a Polaroid camera then it’s always good to have a backup in case one stops working. And you’ll need lots and lots of film, especially if you want to keep some of the Polaroids as a keepsake yourself as well as letting guests take some home.
Three
Hire signage - The “Unplugged” theme is becoming more and more popular, meaning that it’s really not hard to find signs explaining to your guests what it means. This is great, because you can set them up in key areas of your wedding as a visual reminder to please keep the technology away. When done well, they also look great! Below is an example of our Unplugged Ceremony sign for hire next to our Wolfe Mini Step Ladder and Gold Band Wine Barrel.
